Knight or mage: which class to pick as a beginner

Comparing the four vocations in Ancient Warriors — knight, mage, ranger and druid: health and mana, weapons, key spells and play style. Which class suits you.

You choose your vocation when you create your hero, and it never changes. The good news: there’s no wrong choice — all four classes can finish the game. The difference is how you’ll fight. In short: the knight forgives mistakes, the mage punishes them but kills faster than anyone.

The numbers: how the classes really differ

Knight Ranger Mage Druid
Health at level 1 150 105 80 95
Health per level +15 +10 +5 +5
Mana at level 1 40 60 140 120
Mana per level +5 +15 +30 +30
Health at level 60 1,035 695 375 390
Attack range adjacent 5 cells 5 cells (staff) 5 cells (staff)

Skills grow by doing, but at different speeds: the knight quickly learns sword, axe, club and shield, the ranger learns distance fighting, and the mage and druid learn magic. Nobody stops a mage from picking up a sword, but after a few easy levels the skill will all but stop growing. The one hard restriction: wands, staves, spellbooks and caster garb can only be worn by the mage and the druid.

Knight — the best choice for your first hero

The knight can take a hit. His shield scales with his shielding skill, so his defence is several times higher than anyone else’s: an ordinary monster of his level often can’t get through his armour at all. That means you can make mistakes — stand in the wrong place, forget a potion — and survive.

  • Strengths: lots of health, heavy armour, high carrying capacity (925 + 75 per level) — fewer trips to the trader.
  • Weaknesses: hits slower than the casters and only up close; against crowds and casters you have to get right in their faces.
  • The spells you pick him for: Shield Bash (level 18) halves the enemy’s next blow, Shield Slam (level 30) does it to everyone around you, and Recovery (level 50) heals you over time.

Mage — for those who love big damage

The mage deals the most damage and hits from five cells away, but he has a third of the knight’s health and no shield. Magic never misses, and area spells mow down entire camps.

  • Strengths: the fastest killer in the game, especially from level 45, when Sudden Death, Lightning and Ultimate Explosion arrive.
  • Weaknesses: two or three hits from a strong monster and the fight is over. You’ll have to keep your distance and watch your mana.
  • Lifeline: Magic Shield from level 14 — blows come off your mana before your health.

Ranger — the happy medium

The ranger shoots a bow at five cells or a crossbow at four, which hits harder. He can carry a shield with throwing knives, heals himself and conjures his own arrows. He has more health than the casters and steadier damage than the knight. Arrows miss more often the farther the target, so his best fights are at medium range.

Druid — control and allies

The druid slows, roots and poisons enemies, grows a thicket between himself and a crowd, and summons allies: from a goblin to the Grove Warden, who draws monsters onto himself, and the Grove Elder, who heals. He kills slower than the mage, but his fights are calmer — enemies often simply never reach him.

So which one should you pick?

  • First time playing a game like this — knight. Fewer deaths, an easier island, easier first bosses.
  • You love big damage numbers and playing carefully — mage.
  • You want to shoot and not depend on mana — ranger.
  • You like controlling the fight and having helpers — druid.

Everyone starts the same way on Kaldar: even a mage first picks up the dagger from the crate and only later gets his staff from Mireya the healer. So you can test your choice in the very first hour — and if you don’t like it, create a second hero: you can have several on one device.
