The Necromancer is the last master of the order that sealed the crypt under the old cemetery. For a hundred years he has been unpicking the seal from the inside, and at the end of the story quest “The Seal of the Order” you’ll have to stop him. He’s a level-60 boss: 4,780 health, a spell every 1.8 seconds from five cells away, and he raises the dead while you fight him.
How to get there
Leave Riverhollow through the north gate — the old cemetery is right outside. The stair down is in the middle of the graves, guarded by the Crypt Keeper (level 10). Below, the crypt is a series of rooms, each harder than the last: the catacombs, the guard room, the ossuary, the great hall and the crossroads. From the crossroads the prison lies to the west, the treasury to the east, and the sanctum straight south. A layout of every room is on the crypt map.
What level to go at
The sanctum is built for heroes of level 55–60 in the best gear the city sells. Below 55 you can try on the strength of potions, but the Necromancer’s servants and the Bone Knights will burn through your supply fast. Bring:
- Great or Ultimate health and mana potions. Olvir sells the Ultimate ones on the temple steps, at 310 gold each.
- Food. Without being fed, neither health nor mana regenerates.
- If you’re on “The Seal of the Order”, check your quest log (the Q key): the seal drops from the Necromancer only at the stage when Olvir has sent you for it.
Who’s in the sanctum
| Who | Level | Health | Why they’re dangerous |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acolyte of the Rite | 50 | 1,110 | Spells from four cells; they stand in the front corners of the hall |
| Bone Knight | 55 | 2,660 | Heavy blows up close; they stand on the flanks, far apart |
| The Necromancer | 60 | 4,780 | Spells from five cells, summons servants |
| Risen Servant | 58 | 600 | Hits fast; gives no experience and no loot |
Battle tactics
- Clear the hall one side at a time. The acolytes stand by the entrance in the corners, the Bone Knights on the flanks, and there’s enough room between them to take them one by one. Start with the acolyte on one side, then the knight on the same side, then the other side.
- The Necromancer stands at the very end, between the altar and the open coffin. Until you wound him, he doesn’t summon anyone — so only approach once the hall is clear and your health and mana bars are full.
- Don’t farm the servants. Once the Necromancer is wounded, he raises two Risen Servants every 30 seconds, but no more than four are alive at once. They give no experience and no loot — the whole value of the fight is the boss. Keep your damage on the Necromancer and kill servants only if they threaten your survival.
- You can retreat. If your health is melting, fall back to the crossroads and recover. Remember: death sends you back to the Riverhollow square and takes a tenth of your level’s experience — better to drink one potion too many.
Tips for each class
- Knight. Use Shield Bash on the Necromancer — his next blow will be half as strong. Shield Slam weakens every servant around you, and Recovery heals you while you fight.
- Mage. Keep Magic Shield up — blows will go into your mana. Your strongest single-target spell is Sudden Death, and once the servants have gathered around you, Ultimate Explosion.
- Ranger. Ethereal Barrage hits the Necromancer and everyone standing next to him, and Divine Caldera hits everyone around you.
- Druid. Paralyze won’t root the boss, but it will slow him. The Grove Warden draws the servants onto himself, and the Grove Elder heals you during the fight.
The reward
When the Necromancer falls, the rite is broken and a hoard appears at the altar that always drops: the Guardian Shield, an Amulet of Life, crystal and platinum coins, Great and Ultimate potions. The boss himself can drop rare items: the Skull Staff, the Spellbook of Lost Souls, Magic Plate Armor, the Demon Helmet, bone weapons and a bone shield. He respawns after 15 minutes.
For “The Seal of the Order” itself, Olvir gives you 25,000 experience, 12,000 gold and the Order’s Token — an amulet no trader sells. What else you can only get from bosses is in the guide where to find rare weapons and armour.
