Ancient Warriors review: a free RPG in the spirit of classic MMORPGs

What is Ancient Warriors: Order of the Seal? A single-player RPG with classic MMO mechanics: the world, vocations, combat, gear, platforms and how it differs.

If you remember the early MMORPGs — the isometric camera, click-to-attack, skills that grow slowly, gear ladders and boss runs for a single rare drop — Ancient Warriors: Order of the Seal was made for you. It is the same formula, except the world belongs to one player: no queues for the boss, no bots and nobody else standing on your hunting spot.

What it’s about

A storm wrecks the ship Dawn on the reefs of Kaldar island, and your hero comes to on the sand — no weapon, no armour, no money. The island teaches you to survive, and then a boat takes you to the mainland, to the city of Riverhollow. Under its old cemetery lies a crypt that an order sealed a hundred years ago, along with its own last master. The seal is cracking, the dead in the cemetery are growing restless, and the story quest “The Seal of the Order” leads you down to the Necromancer.

Around the city lies a whole continent: a steppe full of barbarian camps, the elves’ village and fortress, the dwarves’ mines under the northern range, the ruins of the Ashen Spire, the renegades’ castle and the vast Necropolis. All of it is on the world maps.

How it plays

Old-school combat. Click an enemy and your hero walks up and attacks at his weapon’s own pace. Where you stand matters: every weapon has its own reach, arrows miss more often the farther the target, and good armour can absorb a blow entirely. Monsters play by the same rules — archers shoot from afar, shamans heal themselves and bosses call in help.

Skills grow by doing. The more you swing a sword, the better you get with a sword; magic level grows with the mana you spend. Each of the four vocations has its own strong skills, and that is the biggest choice in the game — more in the guide “Knight or mage”.

Gear is a ladder. Every kind of weapon and armour has rungs, each with its own level requirement: from the dagger in the crate on the beach to blades you can only take off a boss. There is weight and carrying capacity, hunger, torches for the dungeons and ammunition for archers.

Quests that send you across the world. Every trader in Riverhollow has an errand of his own, and each one sends you somewhere new — to the cemetery, to a barbarian camp, down the road to the castle, into the ruins on the cape.

Who will enjoy it

Anyone who misses Tibia-like games but doesn’t want to spend evenings queuing for a boss. Anyone who likes seeing the numbers — damage, drop chances, experience to the next level — and building a plan out of them. And anyone who wants a relaxed RPG on a phone or laptop that doesn’t need a connection.

Where to start

Download the game, create a hero and play through Kaldar — the tutorial takes about an hour and explains everything as you go. Keep the island map handy, and on the mainland, the levelling guide and the encyclopedia with every monster, item and quest.
